The Union Jack (the national flag of the United Kingdom) is one of the most interesting flags in the world, appearing in no less than 23 other countries’ flags. The State of Hawaii has the flag within a flag in the top left corner, the only US State to have foreign flag in it. The first ever US flag had the Union Jack, with red stripes where the stars now are.

Description

“Sartorial Correctness” is a profound artistic exploration of national identity and cultural evolution, encapsulated through the iconic Union Jack. This piece is not just a flag; it’s a tapestry of history, stitched and woven with the intricate fabrics that symbolize the United Kingdom’s legacy. The artwork dimensions of 30” by 57” allow for a grand display of this historical and cultural synthesis.
The Union Jack, a flag that has found its way into 23 other countries’ flags and holds a unique place even in the State of Hawaii, is reimagined here. Egan’s artwork traces its origins back to 1603, when King James I of Scotland also became King James VI of England, uniting Scotland and England under one monarch and one flag. This flag, a Frankenstein’s monster of sorts, is a composite of various nations’ flags, symbolizing unity in diversity.
In “Sartorial Correctness,” the artist ingeniously incorporates fabrics that are quintessentially British – Tartan, Prince of Wales Check, Pinstripe, and Dog’s Tooth. These materials, marked with the chalk lines and guide stitches of bespoke tailoring, bring a unique texture and depth to the representation of the Union Jack.
Beyond its historical and geographical significance, the Union Jack in this artwork is also a tribute to its deep-rooted connections with British music and pop culture. It highlights the flag’s evolution from a symbol of the 1960s Mod Movement to its pivotal role in the Punk Rock era of 1976, notably with The Sex Pistols and The Clash, and its resurgence in the 1990s Cool Britannia wave.
The term “Sartorial Correctness,” originally used in a flyer for The Sex Pistols, encapsulates the essence of this artwork – a celebration of perfect dressing, cultural relevance, and the everlasting impact of the Union Jack on fashion, music, and film. This piece is a sartorial masterpiece, a narrative stitched in time, resonating with the echoes of a rich and vibrant history.
