With the onset of a new era in artistry, where digital mechanisms began to meld with the traditional modes, Egan found himself on the cusp of this innovative wave when working on ‘The Cult’s Sonic Temple’ album design. Instead of using tangible collages as he did in the past, he was introduced to a novel, less messy, and time-saving digital method, like the touch of a magic wand. Prominent fashion photographer Andrew MacPherson’s striking black and white shots served as the base. Egan then utilized this innovative tech to morph these images into an evocative piece that reminded him of the 70’s band posters – where the allure was more about a captivating visual than individual grandeur. This digital breakthrough paved the way to limitless possibilities, yet, with this painting, Egan sought to revert to a more authentic, less perfect approach, incorporating manually crafted lettering. What this piece gifted him was a profound appreciation for the complexity of pixel manipulation. It prompted a process of iterative creation, where he layered paint until he struck the right balance.
