Manga 2 forms part of the same GQ editorial series photographed in London in 2003 and inspired by Japanese Manga imagery.
The background elements in this image were created almost by accident. While retoucher Lee Stewart and I were working through the edit, the image briefly distorted on screen, producing multiple blurred repetitions of the figure. I liked the effect immediately and decided to keep it. And therefore, the background is totally unique and can never be replicated.
Each of the backgrounds in the series is therefore a distorted semblance of the main figure itself, creating a graphic echo that reinforces the Manga-inspired aesthetic.
