The first thing I did with Duran Duran was the album cover for ‘The Wedding Album’ and the single cover for ‘Ordinary World’ . The band wanted to be more punky in their approach to the album cover, no expensive photo shoots. Nick Rhodes had the idea of using the band’s parents’ wedding photos and the band shots would be photos from various photo booths around London. It’s tough to make any wedding photos look cool so I decided to collage them together in the style of Robert Rauschenberg.
I used the old Dymo label printer for the type and gold leaf over the 4 main pics of John, Nick, Simon and Warren. The single cover was a photo of a tree brightly lit in among washes of bright colors, taken by a good friend of mine and Nick Rhodes, called Dean Chamberlain, which he did by opening the shutter of his camera for long exposure then painted everything with light. I decided to combine the two images into one turning old black and white photographs into an organic colorful impressionistic style.
